LOVE STORY: Je suis mon coeur

Posted in Movies on June 24, 2007 by Jennifer

When I was in junior high, I remember buying the soundtrack to Love Story at a record shop on Main street — and yet it was a movie I had never seen. I liked the cover… faded light brown and cream… a gorgeous couple of the front… and a track named after me. I listened to “Searching For Jenny” and “Skating in Central Park” time after time… having no idea what the view would be or what it meant.

A couple of years ago, I saw the DVD sitting in a rack at Amoeba on Sunset Blvd. I bought it and carried it home in a small yellow plastic bag. It sat patiently among my movie collection… waiting for the moment I’d peel off its plastic wrapping and take it for a spin. I was tempted many times… but turned off at the idea of sitting through some Hollywood vision of a “love story.”

I had no idea how perfect love was… until tonight.

Perfect love.

What makes it perfect?

Purity of conviction.

I’d never seen anything so… close to my own ideal of love. Not just love. Choice. Playing the odds without fear of failure. Because you’ve already won first prize. It is the most honorable of fates… to have had the courage to savor life… and love.

Je suis mon coeur!
