Meaningless Rhetoric – I

Posted in Life, Poetry on May 16, 2008 by Jennifer

Give me a few drinks,

And I’ll tell you about my car,

And how hard it is to stay in style,

And all the while,

The tires are as worn

As the smile

I cannot fake.

I’ll tell you how

I got to where I am

And all about

The way I thought it was

And why I gave in

To the pleasures fleeting fast.

About the past,

You’ll hear it all,

The way it was before

The Fall.

The way I wanted it to be

And why I didn’t

Want to see

The way it is.

What’s that?

We’ve met before?

Just a few more drinks

And I’ll find the door.

Morning’s Light

Posted in Poetry on June 24, 2007 by Jennifer

“Morning’s Light”

It’s been said that water seeks its own level,
Which explains my entanglement with you,
Sad, embittered, and mad at the world.
We see the sky from opposite sides,
Yet the view, at times, bleeds through.

We fall apart waiting
For the call that never comes,
Watching our friends die and wondering why
Things are never the way
We were promised they’d be.

Betrayed by a leak of the eye,
How can I trust myself
To deliver the next lie?
Though clearly wasting my days,
I’ll tell you everything’s alright.

But you’ve seen that same darkness,
A stark madness in a pool of empty eyes
When the night is otherwise still.
Despair with claws drawn
Is impatiently perched upon the windowsill.

Close the blinds, don’t look behind
The pain you were never meant to know.
If you await the morning’s light,
Gentle, forgiving, bright,
You’ll see that beauty still grows.

Sunshine & Shade

Posted in Poetry on June 24, 2007 by Jennifer

The perfect balance of Sunshine and Shade
A tipple of tea for one
And a lovely day is made.

I made it mine without
The wine and yet…
The clouds, though they passed,
Their shadows stayed.
